About Sing4life

Departures - by Bob Gold

Since 2000, Bob Gold has concentrated on solo acoustic piano work, in performance and recording. While continuing to freelance in area clubs and hotels, much of his time has gone into the recording and mixdown of his first album, Departures. This album stresses free improvisation, or performance/composition, along with performances of works by Bill Evans, Federico Mompou, and Paul Buchanan AKA The Blue Nile. There is a rich cross-section of classical and jazz influences, and even folk elements in these improvisations. A very personal and intimate album, the recording is more about expression through an instrument—how the musical idea evolves in the moment, than about musical categories.

Bob Gold studied piano at the Settlement Music School with Irene Beck, a distinguished pianist/educator schooled at the Warsaw Conservatory before WW2. Attending the University of Delaware with a major in Biochemistry, he was inspired to keep his hands in music by the concert pianist/professor Michael Steinberg. Not surprisingly, having grown up in a home full of artists, he chose music over science as a full-time pursuit. After college, his studies of improvisation—always his first love, were self-guided, and in 1985, he put together his first trio.

"As the recording evolved, though, I began to realize that I was missing a level of intimacy that I had developed with my Steinway Model D. There’s a musical connection that can happen while the rest of the world is asleep and the tuning and hearing and even the humidity seem to come together. I then adjusted my sights on capturing those very late night moments, free of sheet music and performance notes. Most of these performance/compositions were of that moment."

The Review
Bob Gold's music means something very special to him, and he even tells us on the inside of the tri-fold Cd jacket. But as the listeners we are the ones who get to decide what it means to us. To each his own. Aficionados of Piano you need not be, for Bob Gold has the gift of making his piano sing the verses of his heart. Each of you who order this Cd will be calmed, caressed, and loved by these songs Bob Gold calls: Departures.

As we listen we begin to move a little slower more calmly more peaceful. (Tracks 1,2,&3) The piano calls to you..."listen hear what I'm saying." You will be able to almost feel his heart, as his hearts work flows from his fingers. Translated on the ivory keys of his Steinway piano you can begin to understand more of yourself. Breath deep, let your self go, in this state we can begin our reflecting.

Now comes track four, the energy is getting focused, clear you thoughts, make no intention, just let the sounds lead you like the sweet fragrance of spring. I found it! I found it! Smile! There it is....Home, safely.... home. What ever memory, thoughts, let them flow freely. Give your self the deserved gift of time to listen. To just listen to Bob Gold weave his way through time and space, to reach up for the stars and come back with love. (Tracks 5,6,7&8)Really something wonderful happens when you just listen and let his music go in. Kudos, Superbly done!

Track nine, has an on going theme, remember this is your time, how you spend it should be well invested. Bob Gold's Departures is conclusively worth the investment. Every once in a while we take time out of our day to just listen, no review, no agenda, just let the music do what it will with-in us. Time being as precious as it is today giving up an hour is not always easily done. This Cd, Departures by Bob Gold we are telling you clearly is worth the investment. Stir your soul, or simply relax, the choice is yours to make. But, Bob Gold lets us into his personal space, which in turn lets us go into ours.

You can feel your emotions, give and take, push and pull, yet all is well.
For it is in the struggle we learn and grow, tracks 10,[11,12,&13]. As a musician reviewing my fellow musicians work I can't help but to wonder even desire to feel what they must be feeling at the moment these great events of music are pouring out of them. To this end this music is inspiring. Track 14 explores new venues. Wow! 15,16,&17 this is not fifty minutes of standard piano - melancholia, fall asleep elevator music. Grandiose is more like it, eloquent, demure, virtuous, playful, but most of all loving, respectful, and devoted. All the things that make your mother and father proud of you. All the things you hope for your children, all the things you hope you are.
God bless you Bob Gold. This solo Piano Cd is amazingly wonderful.
